Guantanamo Boy

Stratford Circus presents the stage adaptation of Anna Perera’s critically acclaimed novel for young audiences Guantanamo Boy by Brolly Productions in  January and February 2012.

‘Innocent until proven guilty? Not here, you’re not’

Khalid likes football, hip hop, computer games and has a huge crush on a girl in his class – like any other teenage boy. But being a Muslim in the aftermath of 9/11 can be very dangerous. Snatched in the middle of the night he is thrown into a nightmare world in which he is presumed guilty. Alone, afraid and far from home, will he have the strength to survive?

Guantanamo Boy is one ordinary boy’s story about having to grow up in extraordinary circumstances.  It is an emotionally challenging piece of work enabling young people to explore the political landscape of war and hatred and at the same time celebrate the human spirit. Devised with a strong multi-media element the production is an immersive experience for the audience.

Stratford Circus commissioned Dominic Hingorani and designer Rachana Jadhav of Brolly Production in 2010 to create this piece.  Local young people have been critical to the development of this piece and we thank all those that participated in the research and development phase of this work.
